The disused railway line which ran between Port Fairy, Koroit and Warrnambool is set to become one of the most exciting and varied walking and cycling trails in Victoria.

Rail Trail Map

Rail Trail Description
There are three major trail heads where you can start or complete your journey; Warrnambool breakwater precinct, Koroit Railway Station and Port Fairy.

The 35 km. rail trail is currently under construction. Port Fairy to Koroit is planned to be open by the end of 2008 and it will be open all the way to Warrnambool by the end of 2009.

Railway History

The picturesque 38 kilometre trail links the historic townships of Port Fairy and Koroit with Warrnambool, all with their own unique personality and style.

The user will travel through dairy and beef farming country, remnant forest, skirt the north side of a 25,000 year old volcano (Tower Hill Game Reserve) and traverse wet lands and coastal sand dunes.

The trail being relatively flat will encourage use by both cyclists and walkers of all ages and levels of fitness.

For the energetic walkers there is a circular link back to Port Fairy via the 22 km. long Mahogany Walk which follows the coast.

The trail construction is a joint project between the Rail Trail Committee of Management, the Moyne Shire Council and the Warrnambool City Council with major funding from the Australian Government and the Victorian Government.
